The Spirit's Passage
An old Aztec legend describes a cenote unlike any other.
Deep in the heart of the Mexican jungle, this cenote is said to grant you an audience with the god of the underworld, Mictlantecuhtli, the lord of Mictlan. If found worthy, he will allow you to bypass the treacherous four-year journey through Mictlan and grant access to a place between dimensions—a realm outside of time and space.
If Mictlantecuhtli grants you entry into this realm, you will rejoice in all the excesses and delights the universe has to offer. You will encounter beings and creatures from other dimensions. However, like all dealings with gods, this gift comes with a cost. The longer you remain in the realm, the more you forget your former life.
Before you realize it, this realm is the only place you’ve ever known.
Born in Monterrey N.L. lived there from 7-15 years old. Been living in Houston for most of my life. Living in both cultures leaves you feeling like you don’t belong in either one. Too American to be Mexican and too Mexican to be American. Through art I found my place in this world plus it gave me an amazing community.
